Live music is one of my favorite experiences in this world. I don’t really care what kind of music it is, I love to go to concerts and I am really thankful that we are getting back to that after a long break from it.
We were recently able to get back to shows and while they were cut short due to some getting Covid, I was able to go to 3 shows on the MercyMe tour. It was fantastic to see these guys playing again and doing what they love. I decided to watch two of the shows uninterrupted but then decided to photograph the 3rd show. It was so fun to be able to practice photography at a concert with being able to get up close. That is something you can’t do at a random show without a photo pass. But while walking around taking pictures, it became increasingly difficult to not get a picture without someone using their phone to video everything.
Then I took Levi and Carley to go to the Luke Combs concert and that is where it was even more evident of how most people live their lives through their phones. It made me so sad. No one was experiencing the show. They were all videoing everything and not so they can go back and watch it because they wanted everyone to see where they were and what they were seeing. It’s never the same, and let’s be honest, you can watch your favorite artist on YouTube whenever you want to.
We now live in a world where we don’t experience anything because we are so tied to our phones. What if the next time you go to experience something, you don’t take your phone out? Or maybe you take a picture with your family to remember, but then you put it away and watch with your eyes and soak in every moment. I have been experimenting with this more and more and it really does make a difference. I can remember every moment in that Luke Combs concert and I don’t even listen to much of his music. It was amazing to watch those people that didn’t have their phones out. The joy they were experiencing.
This is my challenge for you. To live your best life without your phone attached to your hand 24/7. To listen intently to your friends. To engage in conversation. To be present in the moment. Every moment. How rich your life will be if you only make the choice to live life through your own eyes.
